Brewers closing in on Papelbon trade?
MILWAUKEE, WI (The Spread) – According to several media reports, the Brewers are on the verge of acquiring closer Jonathan Papelbon from the Phillies.
Yahoo! Sports’ reporter Jeff Passan tweeted this morning that the Brewers and Phillies are in “serious discussions” regarding Papelbon’s availability. The closer would have to waive his no-trade clause in order to be sent to Milwaukee.
ESPN’s Jayson Stark furthered the story on Friday afternoon stating that the “last remaining obstacle” to a trade involving Papelbon is deciding how much money would Philadelphia be willing to pick up on the closer’s $13 million 2016 option. Of course, there have also been conflicting reports, including one from FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal that a deal wasn’t close.
Papelbon is owed $13 million in 2015 and has a $13 million vesting option for 2016 should he finish 48 games, although he reportedly would want the option picked up in order to agree to a trade. As of this writing the Phillies are 100/1 long shots to win the 2015 World Series according to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv. The Brewers, meanwhile, are 50/1 long shots.
