Former Notre Dame offensive lineman Matt Hegarty is transferring to Oregon, where he will be eligible to play immediately as a graduate student.
Hegarty played in 34 games for the Fighting Irish, including 11 starts last season moving between guard and center. The 6-foot-5, 295-pounder could help fill the spot on Oregon’s line left open by the departure of center Hroniss Grasu, who was drafted by the Chicago Bears.
Hegarty was a highly touted recruit out of New Mexico. He played nine games for the Irish in 2012 before having a stroke and needing heart surgery.
He made a full recovery and appeared in 12 games in 2013 for Notre Dame.
Oregon also added quarterback Vernon Adams from Eastern Washington as a graduate transfer earlier this year.
