Super Bowl XLII Trends
The big game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants is only a few days away, so now is a great time to discuss some Super Bowl betting trends. Trends can be useful when handicapping big games between teams that rarely if ever meet during the regular season.
Bettors need to be aware, however, of which trends may seem juicy, but have no impact on the result of the game or which team covers the point spread.
“Make sure when you use betting trends to handicap games, you stick to trends which indicate specific patterns of against the spread results,” says Michael Seaton, General Manager of the sports betting information site TheSpread.com. “If you are wagering on the Super Bowl XLII point spread, you want to stick with trends that just relate to post season ATS results,” said Seaton.
New York Giants Trends
Bettors of the Giants may be the biggest beneficiaries of New England’s march towards history. After starting out the 2007-2008 season on fire against the point spread, the Patriots have cooled off significantly in the second half of the season and the playoffs.
New York is 3-1 against the point spread in their last four games against New England, but is only 7-6 ATS as an underdog of -10 or more, which they currently are (the current point spread is -11.5 according to Bodog oddsmakers).
This year’s Super Bowl XLII game will be played on the turf of University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, which is more good news for Giants bettors. The Giants are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games played on artificial surfaces.
Some More Giants Trends

– NYG are 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games played against AFC East opponents
– NYG are 0-1 ATS and straight up in their last Super Bowl appearance
New England Patriots Trends
Don’t count out the Patriots just yet. They put up some serious offense this season and have a few favorable trends of their own that should not be overlooked if you will be placing a wager on this game.
The one trend that jumps off the page is that New England is 1-2 against the point spread in the last 3 Super Bowls. However, before you punch the Giants ticket just yet, consider these trends.
The Patriots are 15-9 against the spread in their last 24 games played on turf and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games when the over/under odds have been set at 49 total points or higher.
Some More Patriots Trends
– PATS are 4-0 straight up in their last 4 games against the Giants
– PATS are 9-13 ATS in their last 22 games played after 2 or more weeks of rest
– PATS are 3-4 ATS in their last 7 NFL Playoff games
