British Open Odds
The 2008 British Open Championship kicks off Thursday July 17 and runs through Sunday July 20. Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have released the odds and it’s time to look at some of the favorites and long shots.
Bet the 2008 British Open Championship
The Favorite: Sergio Garcia
Oddsmakers have made Sergio Garcia from Spain the favorite to win the 2008 British Open Championship with 8/1 odds. Garcia tied Padraig Harrington at the 2007 British Open Championship, but eventually lost in a one round, four-hole playoff. Garcia has 17 professional wins in his career, including six on the European Tour and seven on the PGA Tour.
The Value Picks: Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington
As with any major event, there are some value picks in the 2008 British Open Championship. Oddsmakers have made Ernie Els odds to win 12/1, while also listing Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington at 16/1.
Perhaps the best value bet is Harrington, who won the 2007 British Open Championship, defeating 2008 favorite Sergio Garcia in a one round, four-hole playoff. Els is also a solid bet, considering he won the 2002 British Open Championship in a playoff with Stuart Appleby, Steve Elkington and Thomas Levet.
The highest Westwood has ever finished at the British Open was fourth in 2004, while Mickelson finished third that very same year.
The Long shots: Mark Calcavecchia, Michael Campbell Jean Van de Velde
Of course if you like long shots, there are plenty of them in the 2008 British Open Championship. Oddsmakers have listed seven golfers at 200/1 odds to win: Simon Dyson, Tom Lehman, David Duval, Gregory Bourdy, Jeff Overton, John Rollins, and Todd Hamilton.
The true long shots, however, are Mark Calcavecchia and Michael Campbell, who are both listed at 250/1 odds to win, as well as Jean Van de Velde, whose odds are set at 300/1. Interesting enough, Van de Velde actually came in second at the 1999 British Open Championship, so he obviously has had some success in the event.
