2008 Indy 500 Contender Buddy Rice Given 65/1 Odds to Win

Buddy Rice has a major need for speed. Instead of pursing a potential baseball career, Buddy – with the help of his father, a former dragster – decided to concentrate on racing. With that said, oddsmakers from Online Sportsbook Bodog didn’t give Rice a major vote of confidence as he heads into the 92^nd running of the Indianapolis 500, making him a 65/1 long shot to win the race.

Rice’s time of 222.101 in qualifying was good enough for row six at this year’s Indy 500. While some driver’s complained of the wind and rain in qualifying, the five-time Indy 500 veteran Rice was unfazed. (At least that’s how he appeared to the media.) While he’s a long shot at 65/1, one can’t overlook Rice’s experience with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, giving him an edge over driver’s like A.J. Foyt (who is a higher ranked driver this year, yet was given worse Indy 500 odds.)

With this being Rice’s fifth Indy 500 race, he’s no stranger to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. At 32 he’s a veteran of the track and even better, he won the event in 2004 so obviously he’s had quite a bit of success in the Indy 500. He also finished 11^th in 2003, although since 2004 he’s struggled, crashing in a practice run in 2005 and finishing 26^th and 25^th, respectively, in 2006 and 2007.

Oddsmakers are clearly aware of Rice’s previous success at the Indy 500, but at 65/1 odds, they also clearly don’t believe he’s going to challenge top favorites Dan Wheldon, Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan. Even though he won the 2004 Indy 500, Rice’s poor outings in the past three 500’s have contributed to him being a long shot for Sunday’s race.
