Three Belmont Long Shots to Consider
Exaggerator is the clear favorite to win the 2016 Belmont Stakes this evening but which long shots offer bettors value?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Exaggerator is a 9/5 favorite to win the Belmont Stakes, which has a post time of 6:37PM ET tonight. Below are three long shots to consider either putting in your trifectas, or flat out upsetting Exaggerator.
#1 Governor Malibu
Governor Malibu is currently listed as a 12/1 long shot at Bovada.lv but could give Exaggerator a run for his money this evening. In six career races, Governor Malibu has finished inside the money every time and was the runner-up to Unified in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes in his final prep for the Belmont. He’s shown tactical speed in previous starts, should have good position on the rail, and his local experience over this track is a benefit.
#4 Suddenbreakingnews
Listed at 10/1 to win, Suddenbreakingnews has only finished outside the money only twice in his nine-race career, both times due to bad trips. He finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby but skipping the Preakness Stakes should leave him rested and prepared for the Belmont. With deep closers struggling to win the Belmont Stakes, Suddenbreakingnews’ ability to press the pace should play well this evening.
#12 Brody’s Cause
The only contender in this year’s Belmont Stakes field to beat Exaggerator is Brody’s Cause, who has done it twice (Grade 1 Breeders Futurity and the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile). Like Suddenbreakingnews, Brody’s Cause skipped the Preakness to give him more time to prepare for the Belmont Stakes. The only problem is that closers don’t fair well in the Belmont Stakes despite the distance. But at 20/1, there’s no doubt he offers some value.
