According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Always Dreaming remains the Derby favorite at 3/1 odds, followed by McCraken at 9/2. Classic Empire is also in the mix at 23/4, as is Irish War Cry at 6/1. Rounding out the top 5 is Gunnevera, placing him among the contenders who have a shot to win the Derby this weekend.
Continuing with the current odds, Gormley is 10/1, Irap is 15/1 and both Girvin and Practical Joke are 17/1, respectively. Patch and Thunder Snow are both 20/1, respectively, while Hence is 22/1 to win the Kentucky Derby. Tapwrit is 23/1, while Battle of Midway, J Boys Echo and Lookin At Lee are all 30/1, respectively. State of Honor is 45/1.
Gunnevera coming off third-place showing in Florida Derby
In his final start before the Kentucky Derby, Gunnevera placed third at the Grade 1 Florida Derby behind Always Dreaming and State of Honor. He also won the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth, finished second in the Grade 2 Holy Bull, and won the Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot.
In nine career starts, Gunnevera has four wins, two second-place showings and one third-place finish. His career earnings entering the Kentucky derby are $1,170,200, which equates to $130,022 per start. Javier Castellano, who will have the ride on Saturday, was just elected to the Racing Hall of Fame. His best Kentucky Derby finish to date is fourth-place in 2013 aboard Normandy Invasion.
