The Favorite
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Always Dreaming is a 14/5 favorite the morning of the race. Always Dreaming is a Todd Pletcher-trained horse that has won three times in five career races. He also finished second once and third once, and is coming off a win in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on April 1.
The Challenger
The challenger has changed all week. Classic Empire was favored at one point this week, but now he’s 7/1. McCraken has had the next-best-odds moniker a few times this week, but he has the third-best odds now at 6/1. With Always Dreaming favored, Irish War Cry now has the next-best odds at 4/1. In five starts, Irish War Cry has four wins, zero second-place showings and no third-place finishes either. Among his wins, Irish War Cry won the Grade 2 Holy Bull and in his latest start, the Grade 2 Wood Memorial.
Other Contenders
As previously mentioned, McCraken is 6/1 to win the 2017 Kentucky Derby on Saturday and Classic Empire is 7/1. McCraken had a third-place showing in the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes and won the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis, as well as the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club. Classic Empire, meanwhile, is coming off a win in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and also won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Start Time
The 2017 Kentucky Derby will be the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby and is set for Saturday, May 6, 2017 from Churchill Downs. NBC’s coverage of the Derby will start at 2:30PM ET with the post time set for 6:34PM ET. Harry Connick Jr. will sing the National Anthem.
