2019 Belmont Stakes Predictions
To Win: War of Will (7/2)
War of Will gained a measure of redemption by winning the Preakness Stakes after enduring the worst of the controversial traffic jam during the Kentucky Derby. If not for Maximum Security’s infraction, we might be talking about War of Will winning the triple crown this week. As it stands, he was clearly the best horse in Baltimore and should prove so again today. The Preakness was his third win from five starts on dirt, with all three coming in stakes victories. It’ll take another outstanding ride by Tyler Gaffalione, who doesn’t have the same experience in the Belmont as his fellow jockeys. Nonetheless, Gaffalione will mount one of the most talented horses in this year’s field.
To Show: Tacitus (11/5)
If War of Will doesn’t come through, I like Tacitus to emerge victorious. He’s in good form, having won both the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby and the Wood Memorial prior to finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby. He’ll also have an experience rider in Jose Ortiz, who rode Tapwrit two years ago. A true closer, I expect Tacitus to finish somewhere on the board come Saturday evening.
To Show: Bourbon War (9/2)
I expect Bourbon War to rebound off his poor eighth-place finish at the Preakness Stakes. He clearly didn’t take to the blinkers and trainer Mark Henning said they will be removed for the Belmont Stakes. Hall of Famer Mike Smith will have the mount on Saturday and Bourbon War is bred for the distance that he will encounter at Belmont Park.
