2023 Preakness Stakes Betting Predictions
WIN: Mage (8-5)
I didn’t want to list the Kentucky Derby winner but this field is weak overall and Mage is the only contender with a trustworthy profile. Not only did he win earlier this month at Churchill Downs but he also finished second in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on April 1. Did I mention Javier Castellano also has the ride today? In nine Preakness starts, he has two wins and a show, so he knows what it takes to win this event. Despite the lack of betting value, you’re unlikely to win unless you have him somewhere in your top-3.
PLACE: Red Route One (10-1)
Red Route One is coming off a win in the Bath House Row Stakes, finished second in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes and in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes. So what happened in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby on April 1 when he finished sixth? Honestly, I don’t know what jockey Tyler Gaffalione was doing. He held back initially, fell too far behind, moved Red Route One inside, then when he finally started to push, Gaffalione tried to move back outside. It was an absolute mess of a ride, so I’m willing to overlook that one performance to back Red Route One today, especially since he’ll have a pro on the ride today in Joel Rosario.
SHOW: National Treasure (4-1)
I don’t love National Treasure as a contender today, but I do see him being in the mix based on his track record. He’s already raced in three Grade 1 stakes, finishing second in the American Pharoah Stakes, third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and fourth in the Santa Anita Derby, respectively. In his lone other graded stakes, he finished third in the Sham Stakes on January 8 of this year. In a weak field, National Treasure is one of the few contenders that has been consistent in previous races.
