Bettors Say Take Patriots
Despite being anywhere from -13.5 to -14.5 point spread betting line favorites and failing to cover the point spread in 4 of their last 5 games, bettors are still showing support for the New England Patriots to cover the point spread against the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship Game.
Albeit it by a small margin, 51% at press time according to TheSpread.com’s NFL Public Betting Information.
Oddsmakers at online sports book Bodog currently have the Patriots listed as -14.5 point spread favorites. The over/under for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game have been set at 47.5 total points, according to Bodog Oddsmakers.
“There is still a very good chance that those numbers could flip flop before game time” said Michael Seaton, General Manager of www.thespread.com. “ As we sit here there are still only about 50,000 point spread bets that have been placed on this game which is most likely probably only around a third of the total bets which will be made by kick-off” said Seaton. “Most recreational bettors wait until game day, I would be very surprised to see the Patriots with the majority of the point spread bets when it is all said and done.”
AFC Championship Game bettors can also expect to see some late movement in the Chargers/Patriots point spread. Weather, final injury information and how bettors make their selections over the course of the next 24 hours will all have an impact on the spread as oddsmakers try to balance the betting on both teams.
New England is 6-2 against the point spread in the last 8 games against the Chargers. The Patriots are 4-1 ats in the last 5 games they have played against San Diego at home. Since 1992 the Patriots are 24-0 straight up when oddsmakers make them a favorite of -10 points or more.
