Preakness Long Shots
History tells us to make money on the Preakness Stakes you need to focus on the long shots in some exotics due to the race being dominated by favorites.
With eight of the last eleven winners paying 3-1 or less at the window, it is important to try and make a decent score with some long shot exotics.
We will review some of the ponies who have a shot at being there at the end and helping boost your pay day.
Bet on the 2008 Preakness Stakes
Yankee Bravo – Currently Listed at 20/1 at Bodog
Yankee Bravo finished third in the Louisiana Derby missed qualifying for the Kentucky Derby due to a setback (finished 4th) on April 5th at Santa Anita which cost him the needed “money earned” to make the opening round of the Triple Crown. Unlike other horses in the race, Yankee Bravo has put up good numbers on various track conditions (dirt, turf, and artificial) and is not restricted to a certain track.
Kentucky Bear – Currently Listed at 12/1 at Bodog
In the history of the Preakness, only twice in the last twenty-two years has a horse led from start to finish. Many of the experts agree that the winner of the race will have to stay within striking distance of the leader.
Kentucky Bear’s Trainer Reade Baker (who has been in the news for some not so friendly comments on Big Brown) has stated “He’s a very kind horse, and I think you can place him anywhere you want.”
There is huge value in putting this horse in the end of some trifecta and superfecta wagers.
Macho Again – Currently Listed at 20/1 at Bodog
Macho Again is one of the most undervalued horses in the field. Using a perfectly timed “middle move” to win the Derby Trial, the strategy and speed behind Macho Again plays right into the track conditions at Pimlico.
With the superfecta in this race averaging a $6000.00 payout for a $1.00 wager, Macho Again is well worth some exotic wagers.
With only 10 Preakness winners in history paying 12-1 or more, going crazy on a long shot to win is not a sharp handicapping decision. Instead, focus on the exotics using a handful of the long shots that are fitted well for this speed based track that is only 70 feet wide.
