Montreal Favored in the Canadian Classique
It‘s not quite the spectacle of the El Classico or the United derby. Still, for Canadian soccer fans, a heated rivalry will occur this weekend as two of Canada‘s MLS hopefuls will go head-to-head in the Canadian Classique.
The bookmakersfavor Montreal, but for Wilfried Nancy and his squad, recent results have dampened their hopes of finishing top of the MLS Eastern Conference. Consecutive losses to LA Galaxy and Kansas City gave a reality check to the previously first-place position squad;however, they‘re still sitting in fourth place, and an MLS Cup playoff position is still a likely outcome.
The concern for Montreal is their inability to remain defensively sound, allowing seven goals in their previous four home meetings, with the two remaining games in July taking place on home soil. That said, Montreal should be lively for this weekend‘s fixture as Toronto eliminated them from the Canadian Championship semi-final last month by a staggering 4-0 scoreline.
Confidence in Toronto
Toronto‘s road success this term is glaringly an issue for Bob Bradley, as his squad is still winless when playing away from home in the Eastern Conference, losing another road game to Fire this past Wednesday.
To make matters worse, the Reds are on the brink of breaking history, but not the kind they want to be attached to their club‘s name, as they‘ve now conceded a goal in 28 straight MLS meetings, the fourth-longest goals-allowed streak in ever.
Toronto are goalless in four of their last five MLS away games, but they can withdraw a level of confidence from their last meeting with Montreal in the Canadian Championship, a game they successfully won 4-0.
All bets are off when it comes down to a rivalry game, but we can‘t ignore the fact that Toronto has lost two of their previous visits to the Saputo Stadium, allowing seven goals in the process.
Final Thoughts| MLSBetting Odds
The betting odds slightly favor the home side, and rightfully so. However, the goals market is the safer betting approach as we should expect this Canadian rivalry to deliver at both ends of the pitch.
I’m expecting Montreal to dictate the pace and seek their revenge from the Canadian Championship losing endeavour as the visitors continue their struggles while playing away from home. But to place ourselves in a safer betting position, backing this game to provide goals is the viable approach.
