Offseason Additions:
One year after trading Devin Harris and two first round picks for Jason Kidd, the Mavericks were rather quiet this offseason outside of signing Rick Carlisle to replace Avery Johnson as head coach. The team also acquired Shawne Williams from the Indiana Pacers.
2008-2009 Season Outlook:
Owner Mark Cuban has this team in do-or-die mode after trading the future (Harris) for a player that might be past his prime (Kidd) last season. Regardless, the Mavericks have sold themselves to Kidd’s production and are hoping he, Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard and Jason Terry will be enough to get them to another title appearance.
While this team seems to be in desperation mode, it’s hard to count such a talented group out of the running. They play in a tough division that also features the New Orleans Hornets, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets, but if Kidd has the legs under him for one last run, there’s no reason to think this veteran Dallas squad can’t make a surprise championship run.
