The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic is Saturday October 25 and Fairbanks is one of the small long shots.

Fairbanks was a last second add as Team Valor president Barry Irwin waited until the final hour before deciding whether or not enter the Marathon or the Breeders’ Cup. The Breeders’ Cup got the nod after Irwin and trainer Todd Pletcher weighted the options.
“We’re going to the front,” Pletcher said. “That scenario would have also made Fairbanks dangerous in the 1 ½ miles Marathon but that purse had one less zero.” (So essentially, the decision between the Marathon and the Classic wade based on distance of the race and money.)
Fairbanks has three victories since March of last year, including a Grade 2 win at the Hawthorne Gold Cup on September 27. The issue with Fairbanks, however, is inexperience in Grade 1 races. He has a second place finish at Suburban, a fourth pace finish at Whitney and a fifth place finish at Donn. If you like speed, Fairbanks has plenty of it. But he’s better on short tracks than the long distance races like he’ll run on Saturday.
