Belmont Betting History
When we broke down the Preakness Stakes, we pointed out the importance of speed and called out Macho Again as the most undervalued horse in the field. The result? A second place finish paying a hefty $17.20 to place and a nice $10.40 to show.
As we move to the final leg of the Triple Crown and Big Brown’s attempt to make history, there is only thing that matters: stamina.
Oddsmakers from online sportbook Bodog has made Big Brown a 2/7 favorite to win the Belmont which are again very short odds for bettors.
The Belmont Stakes is a mile and half race and historically has not been kind to big named horses that use speed to dominate. Before betting this race you must understand the history behind it and make sure to factor this into your handicapping. The majority of the horses in this race will have never seen 1-¼ miles, thus making anything you witnessed at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes irrelevant.
In handicapping the Preakness, factoring in the Beyer Rating dominance of Big Brown (three 100+ compared to a field of 90’s and below) was essential in conceding him the easy win. When we look at the Belmont Stakes, we find three recent winners with less than amazing speed figures in their previous starts: Jazil at 97, Birdstone at 85 and Commendable with a lowly 69.
Win $10,000 on the 2008 Belmont Stakes
Also, do not assume the Triple Crown is a guarantee for Big Brown. There have been six horses since 1997 that needed the Belmont Stakes to wrap up the Triple Crown and all six came up empty. Pay extra attention to any horses that were in the Derby and skipped the Preakness. This added time to prepare for the conditions at the Belmont Stakes might pay you dividends at the betting window!
