Nyquist favored to win Preakness Stakes

The odds to win the Preakness Stakes have been released and no surprise, Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist has opened as the favorite.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Nyquist is -140 to win the Preakness Stakes, which will take place on May 22. Exaggerator, who finished as the runner-up in the Kentucky Derby, is 9/2 to win the Preakness, while Stradivari, who did not run at Churchill Downs, is 12/1.

Gun Runner finished third in the Kentucky Derby and is 14/1 to win the Preakness, as is Suddenbreakingnews, who finished fifth at Churchill Downs. Destin, who finished sixth in the Derby, is 16/1, as are Mor Spirit and Creator, respectively. (Mor Spirit finished a disappointing 10th at the Kentucky Derby while Creator was 13th.)

Outwork and Dazzling Gem are both 20/1, respectively, to win the Preakness Stakes while Collected, Cherry Wine and Swipe are all 25/1, respectively. Uncle Lino, Lani, Fellowship and Awesome Speed are all 33/1 long shots, respectively, to win at Pimlico, while Laoban has the longest odds to win at 40/1.

Nyquist is currently undefeated through eight career races, which includes a win in the Kentucky Derby last Saturday. Some of his other victories including the Florida Derby, the San Vicente Stakes, and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He held off Exaggerator down the stretch at Churchill Downs, but one must wonder if he has enough left in the tank to produce a victory at Pimlico in a few weeks.
