Grey Cup Compared to The Super Bowl?
The Grey Cup has made a comeback and will be held on December 12th in Hamilton at Tim Hortons Field, after 2 whole years.
In the match, the defending champions, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be facing off against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The occasion will be the 11th time that Hamilton is hosting the event.
Two months afterward, the 56th edition of the Super Bowl will begin. The event will take place on February 13 in Los Angeles, and will be hosted at the newly constructed SoFi Stadium.
Research carried out by Betway shows that the Grey Cup stacks up to the Superbowl in a number of ways. For instance, both championship events are held in the biggest stadiums in Canada and the US. Unsurprisingly, the Super Bowl has had an audience of at least sixty thousand spectators annually since the year it was launched in 1967. Moreover, over one hundred thousand people have watched the game unfold on 5 major occasions such as in 1976, 1982, 1979, 2010, and 1986.
On the other hand, the grey cup has not had such a big audience as the Superbowl. Even though the crowds can exceed 50,000, the stadiums in Canada cannot occupy so many people because of their small sizes. For instance, the biggest stadium in Canada is the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, which can hold 66,000 people during a football match. The Grey Cup matches have had more than 60,000 people on only 8 occasions. In terms of the audience, the Grey Cup has had an audience of 1, 238, 196 people over the last twenty-five editions compared to the Super Bowl, which had 1,771,947 people.
In terms of the TV ratings, the Super Bowl is among the most-watched sports occasions worldwide, every year. Surprisingly, 4.48 million people in Canada have watched the CFL since 2010, but over 6.68 million people have watched the Super Bowl. The highest viewership rating for a Grey Cup was thirteen million in 2012. The highest viewership for the Super Bowl was in 2020 when 18.7million people tuned in to watch.
The NFL game is usually held in a warm climate to avoid harsh weather from affecting the event. On the other hand, the CFL may be affected by vagaries of weather such as wind and rain because they don’t have options because of the few stadiums available.
A big similarity between the Super Bowl and the Grey Cup is the halftime performances. It attracts a huge audience mostly because of the performances. The biggest artists that have ever performed include Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. The 2021 Super Bowl will feature the biggest musicians such as Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, and Snoop Dog.
The halftime show for the Grey Cup has also featured an impressive list of stars such as Shania Twain, Lenny Kravitz, Justin Bieber, and The Black-Eyed Peas. The headliner for the 108th CFL will be Arkells.
In terms of the scoring, the two games are the same. Although more points have been scored in the Grey Cup than in the NFL counterpart, the Super Bowl has more touchdowns than the CFL.
The Grey Cup does not come close to the Super Bowl because the latter usually has a larger crowd and is held in bigger stadiums. Moreover, the half-time is usually more interesting. However, the Grey Cup is almost twice as old as the NFL counterpart. Even though it may not be as glamorous or high-budget as the Super Bowl, it is a celebration of sports in Canada and is loved by the locals there.
