Ice Box Favored
There won’t be a Triple Crown winner this year, but Saturday’s 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes has its own set of intrigue. Here the latest from BroburySports.com.
You can also enter our famous $1 Million Triple Crown Challenge that is still alive after the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. This comes with a guaranteed $10,000 Prize Pool.
This is an unusual Belmont Stakes as both the winner of the Kentucky Derby (Super Saver) and Preakness (Lookin at Lucky) will not be in attendance. That hasn’t happened since 2006 when Jazil won the Belmont.
Ice Box (2/1) is the now solid favorite after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby and skipping the Preakness. He’s a Nick Zito trained horse and also won the Florida Derby back on March 20.
Zito knows a little something about winning the Belmont. In 2004, Birdstone was a 36/1 long shot, ruining the Triple Crown bid of Smarty Jones. In 2008, Da’ Tara (38/1) beat the much-hyped Big Brown, who shockingly came up way short in his Triple Crown bid.
Zito’s other horse on Saturday is Fly Down (4/1). He was the winner of the Dwyer Stakes on May 8 at Belmont Park, and is a legit contender as well.
First Dude is also 4/1. He finished second at the Preakness. Trainer Dale Romans is having a great year with Paddy O’Prado also finishing third in the Kentucky Derby. A win here would cement Romans’ season.
The Belmont Stakes is known for upsets as it’s the longest and most grueling leg of the Triple Crown. Several of the ‘dogs below provide great value like Stately Victor (12/1).
Brobury has also raised the bar by offering several props. The favored margin of victory is 1 to 2 ¾ lengths (+300), followed by 3 to 5 ¾ lengths (+350). There are -110 odds to whether the winning saddle cloth number will be Even or Odd.
