Offseason Additions:
Indiana dealt center Jermaine O’Neal to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for T.J. Ford, who is a quick playmaker that fits the style the Pacers want to play now. The team also parted with Shawne Williams, who got in trouble after being arrested for possession of marijuana.
2008-2009 Season Outlook:
Ford and Danny Granger bring some much-needed athleticism to a team that features Mike Dunleavey, Jeff Foster and Troy Murphy. The Pacers want to get younger, faster and run a more up-tempo kind of offense, but it’ll take a while as players start to transition into new roles.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Pacers look like without O’Neal, although one can hardly blame them for parting ways with the center unable to stay healthy. Ford is the real deal, but he’s young and he’ll need help if Indiana hopes to compete this season.
