Kentucky Derby Weather Report

Could rain produce a muddy track at this evening’s Kentucky Derby? Here’s a weather report for the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Rain is expected to fall at some point this evening in Louisiana, although the odds that it’ll come before the race are 50/50 according to the Courier-Journal. The Kentucky Derby will take place around 6:30PM ET at Churchill Downs.

“Mark Jarvis said the forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain and even some thunderstorms around race time, with temperatures in the upper 70s.

Jarvis said that late this morning a storm system was forming over southern Iowa and northern Missouri and was expected to drop sharply and quickly to the southeast.   He said the rain most likely would reach Louisville between 7 and 10 p.m.”

The Courier-Journal also notes that there’s a 30 percent probability of rain or thunderstorms after 4:00PM ET, but the odds double to 60 percent by 8:00PM ET. Thus, there might be a light rain that falls for tonight’s Kentucky Derby, but the heavy stuff won’t come until later.

You should be good to place your wagers now if you spot value in the odds. If you’re going to hold off, waiting to receive the latest track information from NBC ahead of tonight’s race isn’t a bad idea.
