The Odds: According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Lani is a 28/1 long shot to win the Kentucky Derby this weekend. Nyquist remains the favorite at 2/1 while Mohaymen has the next-best odds at 9/2 and Exaggerator and Gun Runner are 13/2, respectively. Mor Spirit is also 15/2.
A Snapshot: In six career starts Lani has three wins, one second-place finish, and zero third-place showings. Owned by Yoko Maeda and trained by Mikio Matsunaga, Lani has earned $1,366,618 in his career and $227,770 per start. A two-time leading U.S. sire Tapit out of the elite Japanese racemare Heavenly Romance, by 1989 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Sunday Silence, Lani is considered a pacesetter in terms of running style.

OVERVIEW: Lani made the first five starts of his career in Japan, where he won twice. He also emerged victorious in the Grade 2 UAE Derby on March 26, beating Polar River and Yu Change in the process. But the best finish by a UAE Derby winner in the Kentucky Derby came from Master of Hounds, who finished fifth in 2011.
