The Team to Beat
Los Angeles FC returns to the Banc of California Stadium this weekend with the most authoritative MLS record in toe. Sitting comfortably in the first position of the domestic table, no other team – Eastern and Western Conference – has collected more points (45) than LAFC this term.
LA coach Steve Cherundolo began the MLS season with the squad that everyone wanted to beat; unfortunately for those teams, the California-based unit has lived up to their expectations and collected 45 points after 21 games. And with the MLS transfer window ending, Cherundolo will see the arrival of some big European names to further extend his squad’s elite-level potential.
Home form for LAFC has been impeccable, where they’ve earned points in all but one of their 2022 regular-season meetings inside the Banc of California Stadium. In addition, Cherundolo’s men have netted 11 goals from their previous four games, as the Cali fans continue to be gifted with a never-ending amount of entertainment on home soil.
There’s no denying that LAFC boasts some of the most notable star power upfront; however, we shouldn’t neglect their defensive masterclasses that have allowed just 22 goals this term – the lowest in the Western Conference.
Playoffs in Sight
This season’s CONCACAF Champions League winners are vying for the final playoff position in the Western Conference as they sit one point behind Portland in 9th. Still, Seattle fans aren’t used to seeing their team so low in the table positioning.
The Sounders have never failed to reach the MLS playoffs since joining the MLS, but they’ll be faced with a stern test in California this weekend should they want to see this streak continue. Unfortunately, Seattle has recently dropped the ball on the road, and three of their next four games will be contested away from home.
To make matters more challenging, Seattle hasn’t defeated the Black and Gold on the road in their previous five visits to LA, with a 12-3 scoreline favoring the Cali squad during this stretch.
Final Thoughts | MLS Betting Odds
The betting odds favor the home side, and rightfully so. The talent-rich LA squad is a daunting task for any team in the MLS, even more so when defending a solid home record.
LAFC is playing some of their best soccer right now, and although Seattle has proven themselves a resilient team, they’ve faltered in attack when playing away from home. The visitors have lost five road games this term, and I expect LAFC to make it six.
The moneyline odds on LAFC aren’t desirable. Still, I believe Cherundolo and company can win this fixture by at least a 2-goal margin, therefore giving us some plus-money value on the handicap market.
