The Favorites: Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have established the surprising Chicago Cubs as the favorites to win the 2008 World Series at 7/2. The Cubs recently acquired Rich Harden to compliment ace Carlos Zambrano in the starting rotation and the club should have star outfielder Alfonso Soriano (broken hand) back sometime in the second half. The Cubs might be the most balanced team in all of baseball.
Even though the Tampa Bay Rays led the Boston Red Sox most of the first half in the AL East Division, oddsmakers consider the BoSox (3/1) heavy favorites to win the 2008 World Series as well. J.D. Drew is swinging a hot bat for Boston and the club should welcome back power hitter David Ortiz (wrist) sometime in the next month.
The Values: Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers
The Los Angeles Angels are 13/2 favorites to win the 2008 World Series, making them a tremendous value pick given their strong pitching and solid lineup. With John Lackey back in the rotation to compliment Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana, the Angels could be the sleeper in the AL. Plus, with Rich Harden now in Chicago, the Halos don’t have a ton of tough competition in the AL West so they should cruise in the second half.
Even though they’ve dropped seven in a row, the Tampa Bay Rays are still a great value at 5/1 odds. They own one of the league’s best young lineups and their pitching has finally started to match its potential. Scott Kazmir is off to a great start and Matt Garza has also given the Rays quality outings.
Finally, with the acquisition of ace C.C. Sabathia, the Milwaukee Brewers offer plenty to get excited about as well. With hitters like Ryan Braun, Corey Hart and Prince Fielder, their lineup is stacked and Sabathia compliments Ben Sheets incredibly well in the rotation. The Brewers are seven back in the NL Central, but given their talent, they could be the sleepers in the NL and therefore a steal at 12/1 odds.
The Deep Sleeper: San Francisco Giants
They don’t have a ton of talent, but the San Francisco Giants have enough pitching to stay competitive throughout the rest of the season. Tim Lincecum is off to a tremendous start and both Matt Cain and Barry Zito have proven to be better second half pitchers. At 150/1 odds, the Giants are long shots. But given that no team in their NL West Division is over .500, San Fran only sits seven games back of first and could make a surprising run.
