Mr. Z Kentucky Derby Odds

CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) – Mr. Z will look to pull the upset on Saturday when he competes in the 2015 Kentucky Derby.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, Mr. Z is a 40/1 long shot to win the Kentucky Derby, giving him the same odds as Bolo, Danzig Moon, Keen Ice, Ocho Ocho Ocho and War Story. American Pharoah is also the favorite at 9/4, while Dortmund is 9/2 and Carpe Diem is 7/1.

Mr. Z placed third in the Arkansas Derby behind American Paroah and Far Right, which proved to be a big rebound performance after finishing ninth in the Louisiana Derby on March 28. He also placed third in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes, the Smarty Jones and the Los Alamitos Futurity.

For those looking for a reason to take Mr. Z as a long shot on Saturday, D. Wayne Lukas is his trainer and he owns 14 Triple Crown races. Those 14 victories are more than any trainer so if there’s a long shot worth taking a flier on, it might be Mr. Z.

Mr. Z drew an unlucky post position on Wednesday evening. In the history of the Kentucky Derby, the No. 17 post has never produced a winner and that’s the gate that Mr. Z will emerge from on Saturday.
