And then there were three.
Green Bay exited ranks of the NFL’s undefeated in Week 5, leaving reigning Super Bowl champion Indianapolis, New England and Dallas as the league’s only unbeaten clubs.
After this week, there only will be two.
Dallas, which rallied to nip a stubborn Buffalo squad while easily falling to the spread, hosts New England in Sunday’s marquee attraction, with both clubs putting 5-0 ledgers on the line.
The early Las Vegas Hilton line had the Patriots favored by 5.
Indy gets its bye this week.
Many NFL observers have been enamored of the Patriots, especially after they acquired Randy Moss in the off-season, since early futures were posted.
Professional Handicappers League member Bill Fishman still isn’t convinced.
"New England will show me something when it plays a winning team," Fishman said.
"Don’t get me wrong I just think they have not done that as of yet.
"They catch a mini break with Dallas next week because Dallas played Monday night."
Chicago’s NFC North Division 27-20 victory over the Packers Sunday night stunned many, but not Fishman or fellow PHL member Jimmy Boyd, along with their clients.
The dending NFC champion Bears were Boyd’s NFC North Game of the Year and Fishman’s highest-rated pro play of the week.
"(Quarterback Brian) Griese turned in a positive performance for the Bears and I feel he’ll only get better and the defense did what it is capable of, which is come up with big play after big play," Boyd said.
"There’s still some fight left in the Bears and this win gives them some much needed confidence."
Fishman loved Chicago, which was getting 3 or 3 1/2 during the week at Las Vegas bet shops and closed plus 4 at some.
"I loved them even though they were ‘outstated,’" Fishman said.
"They won even though they were outplayed.
"Their defense was huge."
Chicago improved to 2-3, while Green Bay fell to 4-1.
Another perforance that made both handicappers sit up take notice was San Diego’s 41-3 bludgeoning of Denver.
"I was very impressed by San Diego’s rout on the road," Boyd said.
"I’ll be surprised if it can last."
Fishman won’t be.
"San Diego will come around and probably win that (AFC West) division," he said.
One club that didn’t turn on either PHL analyst was New Orleans, which tumbled to 0-4 after reaching the NFC Championship game versus the Bears during the 2006 season.
"The Saints need another Hurricane," Boyd said.
"New Orleans has too much talent to be playing like this."
Fishman says the ball just hasn’t bounced the Saints’ way.
"All the breaks are going against them, like yesterday when two TDS were taken off the board," he observed.
"They need to win seven of their next eight and I really don’t see it.
"It’s not their year."
The Pats and Colts clash Nov. 4 at the RCADome in both what’s a replay of last season’s AFC Championship and in all probability a preview of this season’s one.
