Bettors Back Patriots
Tom Brady and the New England Patriots look be the first team to finish the NFL regular season undefeated since the 1972 Miami Dolphins went 14-0. NFL point spread bettors hope they will.
How big is this game? There is not a television in the United States that will not have access to the Patriots-Giants matchup as the NFL Network feed will be simulcast on CBS and NBC making it the first three network broadcast in the league’s history.
Online sportsbook Bodog has the current point spread betting line set at the Patriots -14.0 with an over/under of 46.0 total point. The betting public is favoring the New England Patriots minus 14 over the New York Giants by a 58-42% mark according to the latest numbers from TheSpread.com’s nfl public betting information.
The run at 16-0 is not the only thing the Patriots will be playing for Saturday Night. The Patriots already have tied their own consecutive regular season victory mark by winning 18 in a row since last year.
Quarterback Tom Brady has tossed 48 touchdown passes this season and is only one TD behind current NFL record holder, Peyton Manning. Could the record tying touchdown pass be to wide receiver Randy Moss? If Brady to Moss goes endzone, it would tie Randy Moss with Jerry Rice’s 22 touchdown mark he accomplished in 1987.
Besides the individual records, the Patriots are only six points shy of the NFL single-season point record set by the 1998 Minnesota Vikings. One thing standing in the way of these records will be the ferocious pass rush from the Giants defense who have racked up 52 sacks so far this season.
After last week’s comeback victory over the Bills, the Giants have already secured their place in the playoffs and have nothing to play for expect to be spoilers. The last time these two teams tangled was back in 2003 when the Patriots won 17-6 as 2.5 point favorites.
History would lean to the Giants to at least cover the 14 points posted by Bodog oddsmakers since playoff bound home underdogs are 16-4 against the spread since 1980 when playing their final game of the regular season at home. The Giants have played the roll of spoilers before as they handed the 13-0 Denver Broncos their first loss in 1998 at Giants Stadium.
Team insiders are reporting that Giant’s coach Tom Coughlin will be benching his starters after the first quarter despite denials in the media.
