2008 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP PICKS
The Favorite: Phil Mickelson
Mickelson has had some success in 2008, winning the Northern Trust
Open by two strokes over Jeff Quinney on February 17, and the Crowne
Plaze Invitational at Colonial by one stroke over Tim Clark and Rod
Pampling on May 25. In tournament play this year, Mickelson tied for
fifth at the Masters, but finished 18th and 19th
at the U.S. Open and The Open Championship, respectively. Based on
Mickelson’s recent track record at the USPGA Championship (he won the
event in 2005), it’s clear why oddsmakers consider him the favorite at
10/1. (Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Tiger Woods – the winner of the past
two PGA Championships – won’t be playing this year.)
The Value: Padraig Harrington
Harrington’s odds to win the 2008 PGA Championship have been set at
16/1, perhaps making him an outstanding value bet at 16/1. Harrington
is coming off another victory at The Open Championship (his second in
two years) and finished fifth at The Masters. He hasn’t had a ton of
success at the PGA Championship in the past (he finished 42nd in 2007), but once again might be a great value bet at 16/1.
The Long Shot Sleeper: Vijay Singh
Perhaps the long shot sleeper in this year’s PGA Championship is the
veteran Singh, who has been made a 25/1 long shot to win. Singh has had
a rough year after being cut at the British Open and finishing 65th at the U.S. Open. His highest tournament finish this year was 14th
at The Masters, but what makes him a long shot sleeper is the fact that
he won the PGA Championship in 2004. Given his success and the fact
that there isn’t really a heavy favorite this year with Tiger Woods
out, Sign might be a solid sleeper bet.
