The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing will provide an end to the woman’s softball tournament as the Olympic Committee decided to eliminate the sport moving forward.

It’s no surprise that oddsmakers favor the United States in this summer’s tournament considering how the US steamrolled to a 9-0 record in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have made the American’s a 1/6 favorite to win the 2008 tournament.

The United States will bring back 10 of the 15 members from the 2004 team that set a record by outscoring its competition 51-1. Led by fantastic pitcher Jennie Finch, power hitter Crystl Bustos and solid hitter Natasha Watley, the United States will have a tremendous upper hand in Beijing this summer.

Some think that the United States might be vulnerable after losing pitcher Lisa Fernandez. She won four games in the 2004 Summer Olympics, but failed to market he final cut after taking a three-year hiatus from the sport to start a family.

But even without Fernandez, who was highly regarded as one of the finest softball players in the world, the United States is strong and doesn’t appear to have any weaknesses.
