Stradivari Preakness Odds & Profile

After not running in the Kentucky Derby, can Stradivari pull off the upset Saturday when he takes on the field in the Preakness Stakes?

What are Stradivari’s odds to win the Preakness Stakes?

According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Stradivari is 7/1 to win the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. Those odds are bested by only the favorite Nyquist at -160 and Derby runner-up Exaggerator, who has 9/2 odds to win the Preakness this weekend.

Who comprises Stradivari’s team?

His jockey is John Velazquez, his trainer is Todd Pletcher and his owners are John Gunther, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and John Magnier. Velazquez has quite the resume, winning the Belmont Stakes twice, the Kentucky Derby once, and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile once. Velazquez had the ride on Animal Kingdom in 2011 when they won the Kentucky Derby and finished as the runner-up to Shackleford in the Preakness that year.

How has Stradivari faired in his career?

In three career starts he has two wins and zero second and third-place finishes. He made his debut in early November, finishing fourth, but has two starts with a combined margin of victory of 25 3/4 lengths. Those victories came in a Maiden Special Weight and an Allowance.

Can Stradivari surprise in the Preakness?

The margin of victory in his last two races were impressive but the problem is that the Preakness will be his first start in a stakes race. He has the talent, but when a contender hasn’t raced against top competition he becomes a bit of a mystery. That said, the field for this year’s Preakness isn’t overly impressive outside of the top two contenders, Nyquist and Exaggerator. If those two are worn out from running in the Kentucky Derby, perhaps Stradivari can pull off the upset with a strong finish.
