Lani Preakness Stakes Odds

After finishing a disappointing ninth in the Kentucky Derby, will Lani turn things around on Saturday when he races in the Preakness Stakes?

What are Lani’s odds to win the Preakness?

According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Lani is a 33/1 long shot to win this Saturday, which are the longest odds of any contender in the field. At least he has company, as Fellowship, Awesome Peed and Laoban are all 33/1 to win as well.

Who make up Lani’s team?

His jockey is Yutaka Take, his trainer is Mikio Mastunaga and his owner is Yoko Maeda. Take won the Japan Cup in 1999 aboard Special Week.

How has Lani faired throughout his career?

In seven starts he’s won three times, finished second once and third zero times. He won the Grade 2 UAE Derby before racing in the Kentucky Derby, then finished ninth at Churchill Downs a couple of weeks ago. His other wins came in a Maiden on November 22, 2015, and in an Allowance that same month last year.

Should Lani be considered a sleeper?

Lani will be the first Japanese-based horse to run in the Preakness so there’s a bit of mystery to his next start. But he’s a press/pacesetter and didn’t show well at Churchill Downs. Bottom line is that there’s a reason he’s listed among the contenders with the longest odds and I don’t see him competing with Nyquist and Exaggerator at the top.
