The 2008 Heisman Trophy Award will be handed out this Saturday and this year’s race is probably the closets as it has ever been. Let’s update the odds on all of the candidates.
Bet 2008 Heisman Trophy Future Odds
There are five major players in this year’s Heisman race: Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, Iowa running back Shonn Greene, and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have Bradford as the favorite to win this year’s Heisman at –350. Tebow has the second best odds at +300, while McCoy is +400 and Harrell (+4000) and Greene (+6000) are the long shots.
Bradford has had an absolutely amazing sophomore season. He completed 34 of 49 passes for 384 yards and two touchdowns in Oklahoma’s impressive 62-21 win over Missouri in the Big 12 Championship. It was the fifth straight game that the Sooners scored over 60 points.
Tebow had an equally impressive performance in Florida’s 31-20 win over Alabama in the SEC Championship, completing 14 of 22 pass attempts for 216 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran 17 times for 57 yards.
McCoy and the Longhorns never got the chance to play for the Big 12 Championship because they fell behind Oklahoma in the BCS Standings, but he had one of the best seasons of any quarterback in college football. He completed 23 of 28 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns, while running 11 times for 49 yards and two scores in UT’s 49-9 rout of Texas A&M in the final game of the season.
Oddsmakers might favor Bradford because of what he’s done in Oklahoma’s pass-happy offense, but the better value might be in Tebow. He not only has a vote himself because he won the award last year as a freshman, but he also played against tougher opponents in the SEC than Bradford did in the Big 12, plus he not only has succeeded as a quarterback this year, but also as a runner in Florida’s spread offense. McCoy might be as equally worthy of winning the award, but his stock takes a hit because he never got the opportunity to take his team to the national championship like Bradford and Tebow did.
