Dibaba competes for Ethiopia. She is the defending Olympic gold medalist in this event and she also won the gold in 2008. She also has claimed World Championships in this distance in 2005, 2007 and 2013.

Cheruiyot competes for Kenya. She finished with the bronze in this event at the 2012 games, but she is the defending World Champion, winning the 2015 event. She also won the World Championship in 2011.
