Russia is expected to be one of the favorites to win many medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The Olympics kick off August 8.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have listed Russia just behind China (4/5) and the United States (11/10) to win the most overall medals at 14/1 odds. Oddsmakers also like Russia’s chances to win the most gold medals, once again listing the country behind China (2/5) and the United States (13/8) at 25/1 odds to win.

Russia’s over/under total for medals has been set at 79.5 and the country is also favored to win the most gold medals in the sport of boxing at 11/10 odds. Russia might also be one of the value bets to win the Men’s Basketball Tournament at 14/1.

Many consider the host country China as the favorites to take home the most medals in Beijing, followed by the United States. But nobody is counting out Russia and given the odds, it looks like the third likeliest country to win the most gold and overall medals at this summer’s Olympics. Even though they’re still considered a long shot to upset China and the United States for the most medals, Russia might be a solid value bet in most events this year.
