Offseason Additions:
Outside of re-signing Michael Finley and big man Kurt Thomas, the Spurs remained quiet this offseason. They did draft George Hill, a guard that could score in the collegiate ranks that could wind up giving them another offensive threat once he develops.
2008-2009 Season Outlook:
There are two things standing in San Antonio’s way this season: Manu Ginobili’s ankle and an aging roster. Ginobili will be out until at least mid-December with a serious ankle injury, which means the Spurs will be without one of their top three scorers for the first month and a half. Not only that, Tim Duncan is 33 now and outside of Tony Parker, their isn’t a lot of youth on this team.
But counting the Spurs out would be incredibly naïve. They have arguably the best team chemistry of anyone in the league and that matters deep into the season and throughout the playoffs. Some believe this will be the year the Spurs finally take a step back and miss the postseason, but at 15/1 odds, we think they’re a tremendous value bet. Duncan is still playing at the top of his game and once Ginobili returns, expect this team to make a big second half push.
