Barista wins NFL SuperContest

A Starbucks barista won $900,000 by placing first in this year’s Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest.

“Pops2008” entered Week 17 with 49 points, two behind “Orange Crush” and “BNEV” for first place. But after going 5-0 in Week 17 with the selections of the Titans, Jets, Bengals, Eagles and Patriots, “Pops2008” jumped into first place and claimed the grand price in the Las Vegas NFL SuperContest.

Bet NFL Week 17 Games

The SuperContest costs $1,500 to enter and “Pops2008” actually had two entries this year. “Pops 3284” was his other alaysis for the SuperContest and that handle also had 49 points heading into Week 17. But the picks for “Pops 3284” were the exact opposite of “Pops2008,” so “Pops 3284” finished with an 0-5 record. Not that the winner is complaining.

From ESPN.com:

The craziest part of Damon’s victory was that both of his entries were tied for fourth place entering Week 17. He decided to go with opposite sides of five different games. His five best bets on the card were Houston +3 at Tennessee, Buffalo -3.5 at New York, Baltimore +2 at Cincinnati, Dallas +4 at Philadelphia, and Miami +9.5 at New England. He put the opposite plays on his pops2008 card, and that one went 5-0 in the early games on Sunday.

“I’ve never been happier to be wrong about anything in my whole life,” he said.

ESPN.com also reported that after having 345 entries in 2010, this year’s SuperContest set a record for 1,854 entries. After Damon’s victory, perhaps more “regular Joes” will enter the contest next season.
