Tiago is the half-brother of 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo, so he comes from a great family of top horse racers. And despite have such long odds to win this year’s 2008 Breeders’ Cup, Tiago has won the Santa Anita Derby, the Swaps and the Goodwood last year so he has quite the record coming into Saturday.
Tiago has also won $1.8 million and as his trainer John Shirreffs points out, he had an impressive second-place showing at this year’s Goodwood. “He was carried four-wide, or he might have won that (Goodwood) again,” said Shirreffs.
Experts like to note that Tiago is a scrappy racer that doesn’t shy away from a tight race. Nearly all of Tiago’s wins have come by a half-length or less, so you can’t count him out, even at 25/1 odds. He has struggled in races at 1-1/4 miles and finished a poor fifth in the Classic last year, but he could be one of the biggest surprises come Saturday in Santa Anita.
