Tomcito Odds
Termed the “mystery horse” by the media, Tomcito has not been given much of a chance to compete with favorite Big Brown at the 2008 Belmont Stakes. Oddsmakers from Online Sportsbook Bodog have given Tomcito 50/1 odds to win Saturday, June 7.
Bet on Tomcito in the 2008 Belmont Stakes
Tomcito has been coined the “mystery horse” because he started his career in Peru, thus a rather unknown in American horse racing. He won two Peru Classics at 10 and 12 furlongs, despite being only 2 years old, but didn’t have the earnings to join the field at the Kentucky Derby.
Even though he started his career in Peru, Tomcito is American bred. Trainer Dante Zanelli notes that Tomcito is, " very wide in the chest and walked a little wide." Tomcito was bred by Street Cry, who is the sire of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.
Given that he won two Peru Classics, many might be ready to term Tomcito has a “sleeper” at the Belmont Stakes. But there have been horses before Tomcito that have won small purses in Peru, only to fail in the U.S. At 50/1 odds to win, he’s a long shot and might only be worth a look in horse-to-horse wagers.
