Right now, Exaggerator is 5/1 to win this Saturday according to oddsmamkers from online sports book Bovada.lv. That puts him behind only the favorite Nyquist (-125) in terms of the contenders in this year’s field. Stradivari and Gun Runner are also 12/1, respectively, to win the Preakness Stakes.
Who make up Exaggerator’s team?
Exaggerator’s owners are Big Chief Racing, head of Plains Partners, and Rocker O’ Ranch, et al. His jockey is Kent Desormeaux and his brother, Keith, is Exaggerator’s trainer. Kent Desormeaux won the Santa Anita Derby aboard Exaggerator before finishing runner-up in the Kentucky Derby, and also won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2014 as the regular rider for Texas Red.
What is Exaggerator’s career record?
In 10 starts Exaggerator has four wins, three second-place finishes and one third-place showing. The two times he finished outside the money was when he took fifth in his very first race (a MSW on June 5, 2015) and fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on October 31 of 2015. Other than that, he’s finished in the money in every graded stakes race, including the Kentucky Derby (second), Santa Anita Derby (first), and San Felipe Stakes (third).
Is he a serious contender to Nyquist?
Absolutely. Considered a stalker in terms of running style, Exaggerator also proved at Churchill Downs that he can close as well, not to mention going from last to first in the Santa Anita Derby. He’s faced elite competition since he was a 2-year-old and despite finishing behind Nyquist in four career races, Exaggerator could finally surpass Nyquist in the Preakness this weekend if his rival is burnt out from winning the Derby.
