Will American Pharoah run at Saratoga?
LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – Will Triple Crown winner American Pharoah race in the upcoming Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course?
The 2015 Travers Stakes is set for August 29 at Saratoga Race Course on a track also known as the “Graveyard of Favorites.” According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the odds that American Pharoah will race in the 2015 Travers Stakes are 4/6, while the odds that he won’t race are 11/10.
Owner Ahmed Zayat and trainer Bob Baffert are expected to make a decision this weekend on whether or not American Pharoah will run on August 29. The health of the horse comes first and American Pharoah is scheduled for a morning workout at Del Mar in California on Sunday.
Outside of Saratoga’s reputation for being the “Graveyard of Favorites,” there are other factors that could be problematic for American Pharoah on August 29. For example, the 2015 Triple Crown winner is fitted with ear plugs on race days because he’s sensitive to sound. At Saratoga, the horses walk down a path through a crowded picnic area before entering the paddock and too much noise could make American Pharoah agitated.
Formidable opponents also await American Pharoah if he races at Saratoga. Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Texas Red is set to join the field for the Travers, as well as Keen Ice (third in the Belmont) and Frosted (second in the Belmont, fourth in the Derby).
