Giants’ Holland to make spot start vs. Mariners on Wednesday
Derek Holland will start for the Giants on Wednesday against the Mariners. Holland pitched well in a spot start just before the All-Star break, striking out eight batters over 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball versus the Cubs. For the year, he has a 4.06 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 105/38 K/BB ratio in 102 innings
Mariners’ Leake thrives in Coors Field start
Mike Leake allowed two runs – one earned – and six hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Sunday in Colorado. Leake did a good job in a difficult place, throwing 53 of his 77 pitches for strikes. It wasn’t a great outing, but he posted a quality start and gave his team a chance to pick up an important road victory. He finished the first half with a respectable 8-6 record, 4.22 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 121 2/3 innings with 75 strikeouts over 20 starts. He has served as a decent back-end option for most fantasy owners this season.
MLB Betting Trends
San Francisco
The Giants are 6-2 in Holland’s last eight starts.
Seattle
The Mariners are 9-4 in Leake’s last 13 starts.
Prediction:
The Giants are a strange team. They’ll get cold for spells only to get hot for stretches. After losing two of three to the A’s over the weekend, the Giants strung together enough timely hits on Tuesday night to beat the Mariners, who bungled a tie game in the top of the ninth on a defensive miscue. I write this to say that this is a game this afternoon the Mariners should win. One would expect a Seattle team on a 90-plus win pace to not get swept by a middling San Francisco club just trying to keep pace for the second wild card spot in the National League. Still, with the Mariners now 2-6 in their last eight games and winless at 0-4 in their last four games versus a left-handed starter, I’m taking the weird Giants.
The Pick: San Francisco Giants
