Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina, 10/10/20 College Football Week 6 Predictions

Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina Prediction

ACC rivals meet in Chapel Hill on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET when the Tar Heels host the Hokies. Is it wise to lay the four points with North Carolina or will VA Tech cover as the dog?

319 Virginia Tech Hokies (+4) at 320 North Carolina Tar Heels (-4); o/u 57.5

12:00 p.m. ET, Friday, October 9, 2020

Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill, NC

Virginia Tech Game Notes

Virginia Tech HC Justin Fuente said on Monday that he will continue to evaluate his quarterbacks before naming a starter for Saturday’s game at North Carolina. At this point it feels safe to assume that either Braxton Burmeister or Hendon Hooker will be tabbed to start the showdown in Chapel Hill. And if Fuente is leaning towards one or the other, he isn’t showing his cards just yet. “We’ll continue to evaluate,” Fuente said. “Two weeks before the Virginia game, we felt like it was Hendon who gave us the best chance to win. … Heading into this last week we felt it was Braxton.” Burmeister (6’1/205) was just 9-of-24 for 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Saturday’s win over Duke, while also rushing for 54 yards and two touchdowns. The redshirt junior hasn’t been great as a passer, but his ability to make plays with his legs has added a dimension to the Virginia Tech offense.

North Carolina Game Notes

According to pro Football Focus, North Carolina sophomore QB Sam Howell is 0-for-10 on passes beyond 20 yards this season. Howell is far from a bad quarterback. The playmaking and quick-game stability he provides for the UNC offense has been key to the team’s resurgence of late. Howell might be a bad deep passer, though, and has yet to prove he isn’t this year. Not only has Howell failed to connect on any of his 10 deep attempts, but he has put two of them in turnover danger, according to PFF. Perhaps Howell can turn things around and hit a deep strike against Virginia Tech on Oct. 10.

Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina Betting Prediction

The Hokies are 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games in Chapel Hill and have covered in six of their last seven games versus the Tar Heels overall. VA Tech has also covered in six of its last six games as an underdog, is 6-2 against the spread in its last eight games overall and is 4-1 ATS in its last five games coming off a win. On the other side, the Tar Heels are just 6-13 against the spread in their last 19 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game.
