Ortiz (29-2-2) enters the fight as the champion against Mayweather Jr. (41-0). The fight will take place from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and air live on Pay-Per-View at 9PM ET.
According to oddsmakers, Mayweather is the overwhelming favorite to win this bout, with odds of -650. The champion, Ortiz, comes in with odds of +450. The over/under for rounds in the bout has been set at a lofty 11.5.
Mayweather is undefeated at 41-0 with 25 wins by knockout. Mayweather has beaten nearly all there are to beat in boxing’s welterweight division, but still hasn’t fought Manny Pacquiao. Five of his last six wins have come by decision and his last victory was in May of 2010 when he defeated Shane Mosley by decision. Mayweather was knocked down in the fight but rebounded and used his speed to clearly win the fight.
Ortiz is just 24-years-old, born 10 years after Mayweather. He is 29-2-2 in his career with 22 wins coming by knockout. This is the biggest fight in the young boxer’s career. He is coming off a decision win over Andre Berto to claim his championship, but he fought Lamont Peterson to a controversial draw in December of last year. He is 5-1-1 in his last seven fights with two wins coming by knockout. Ortiz was originally a light welterweight and has not been fighting at welterweight for too long. Ortiz will have to match the speed of Mayweather in order to win the fight, or look to land one big punch, but that hasn’t worked out too well for Mayweather’s other opponents.
WBC Welterweight Championship Bout Odds – Saturday, September 17
