Cotto (40-4, 33 KO) is putting up his Ring and WBC middleweight titles against Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KO), who is a former junior middleweight champion. Cotto has won three straight fights, two of which were by KO. His last loss came at the hands of Austin Trot back on Dec. 1 of 2012. Alvarez has also won three straight, with two also coming by KO. His last loss was to Floyd Mayweather Jr., back on Sept. 14 of 2013. He holds a win over Trout, back in April of 2013.
According to the latest oddsmakers, Alvarez is the favorite for this fight, as he is getting odds of -280 to win, while Cotton has been given a money line of +215 to prevail. These two meet on Saturday night for the Ring Magazine and WBC Middleweight Championships. The fight will take place from the Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas.
Alvarez is 10 years younger than Cotto, but stepping up in weight for the fight, which could be a factor. Oddsmakers feel that Alvarez’ youth and speed will play a major role, but Cotto has plenty of motivation for the fight. With Floyd Mayweather Jr. saying he is retiring, the door is open for a new mega star in boxing and both men could take that reign with a victory on Saturday.
