Jones arrested, UFC 187 bout in doubt

LAS VEGAS, NV (TheSpread) – Jon Jones is in some legal trouble and his UFC Light Heavyweight title defense at UFC 187 next month could be in jeopardy.

Jones was released on bond after turning himself in to police on Monday following a hit-and-run incident that he was allegedly involved in on Sunday in the town of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he trains and lives most of the year.

Jones allegedly struck another vehicle carrying a 25-year-old pregnant woman after running a red light. The woman suffered varying injuries, including a broken arm. After the collision, eye witness have Jones fleeing the accident, only to return to grab money from his car, then fleeing again. A marijuana pipe was discovered inside the vehicle, which was a rental. Jones has had a DUI in the past and failed a drug test for cocaine in the last year.

Jones is currently scheduled to defend his championship against Anthony Johnson in the main event of UFC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas. According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, the odds for this fight have been pulled. As recent as Monday, Jones was listed as a -225 favorite over Johnson.

Jones (21-1) has been the UFC’s light heavyweight champion since 2011 and he has defended his belt eight times. His last fight was an impressive decision win over previously-unbeaten Daniel Cormier. Johnson is on a nine-fight win streak and he is 3-0 since making his return to the UFC as a light heavyweight. He once fought in the organization as a welterweight. His last fight was a first-round TKO win over Alexander Gustafsson on Jan. 24.
