WHY MAYWEATHER CAN WIN: Floyd Mayweather Jr. comes into this fight as the clear favorite due to his 49-0 record as a professional boxer. He faces McGregor, who has never had a professional boxing match. Mayweather has displayed a speed and style that has yet to be figured out by any opponent. It’s hard to imagine someone stepping into the ring for the first time and being able to do what nobody as done. McGregor is accustomed to a different style, competing in MMA. He has to think like a mixed martial artists, utilizing kicks, elbows and takedowns while boxing. Changing those instincts for an actual boxing match could be very difficult.
WHY MAYWEATHER CAN LOSE: This fight doesn’t come without some risks. McGregor, despite being inexperienced, still has shown a tremendous amount of power in his left hand. He was able to knock out longtime UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo with one punch. This fight won’t have MMA gloves, but will have just 8 oz. boxing gloves instead of the usual 10 oz. glove. Should McGregor land a square left, it could end the fight. Mayweather has struggled with southpaws in the past. Mayweather also hasn’t fought in nearly two years. Ring rust could be an issue for the fighter, who is now 40 years old.
