UFC 142 takes place Saturday night and the main card will air live on Pay-Per-View at 10PM ET. The event takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Preliminary bouts will air live on FX.
The main event of UFC 142 features Brazilian Jose Aldo (20-1) defending his featherweight championship against top contender and unbeaten Chad Mendes (11-0). Aldo is the favorite to retain his title according to oddsmakers, as he has been given a money line of -250 while the challenger Mendes has odds of +200 to win the strap. Aldo is a very talented striker that uses muay thai knees, kicks, and punches to overwhelm his opponents. He also has some solid takedown defense, which helps against Mendes, who is an explosive wrestler. Mendes has some fast hands, but he will not have the edge on his feet against a fighter like Aldo. Mendes must avoid the kicks and take Aldo to the mat if he hopes to win the championship.
The co-main event of Saturday’s card features a pair of explosive middleweight fighters as Brazilian Vitor Belfort (20-9) takes on Anthony Johnson (10-3). Oddsmakers see this as a very close fight with Belfort getting a money line of -120 while Johnson has odds of -110. Belfort is a veteran of the octagon and has some of the fastest hands in all of MMA and some of the most powerful. Johnson is no joke himself, as he has devastating power in his hands and feet. Johnson is moving up in weight for the first time, as he was a welterweight for most of his career. The key to this fight will be Johnson’s striking, as he is not as technical as Belfort. Johnson must not leave himself open with a wild punch, because he will be put to sleep if he does.
