Weidman (12-0) is looking to defend his championship for the third time tonight against a former UFC light heavyweight champion in Belfort (24-10), who has won his last three fights by KO to earn this title shot. These two have been scheduled to fight on two previous occasions but injuries have postponed the fight to now. Belfort has not fought since November of 2013 while Weidman last competed July 5 of last year.
The latest odds according to oddsmakers at GTBets have Weidman as the clear favorite, as he is getting odds of -500 to win, while Belfort has a money line of +350 to previal. These two will meet in the co-main event of UFC 187 tonight, which takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will air live on PPV at 10PM ET.
The odds aren’t really doing this fight justice. Vitor Belfort has looked unstoppable in his last three fights and the speed he has in his hands and feet make him a very dangerous opponent for Weidman. Weidman is a very skilled striker and grappler that has done a good job of avoiding damage, but one mistake against Belfort could end his night. The key for Weidman will be to survive the early rounds and force Belfort to carry his weight against the cage when possible. Belfort has never been known for being able to sustain his explosiveness for long fights. If Weidman pushes the fight into deep water, he should be able to finish a fatigued Belfort in the fourth or fifth round with a submission. There is temptation to take Belfort with the long odds and hope for a KO finish early, but the gut says go with the champion.
UFC 187 FREE PICK: Chris Weidman -500
