This fight was originally supposed to be Johnson (19-4) vs. Jon Jones, but Jones was suspended indefinitely and stripped of the title he has held since March 19, 2011 due to issues away from the octagon. Cormier (15-1) now steps in just four months after losing a five-round decision to Jones for the first loss in his career. Johnson hasn’t lost since January of 2012 and is 3-0 since making his return to the UFC, including a pair of first-round KO’s.

According to the oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Cormier is the slight favorite to win this fight, as he has odds of -130 to win, while Johnson is coming in with an even money line of +100. This fight will be the main event of UFC 187 this Saturday at 10PM ET. The event takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and airs live on PPV.

Both men are very strong. Cormier fought at heavyweight for the majority of his career before trimming down. His is somewhat short armed, but very strong and capable of getting Johnson to the ground. Johnson is the longer fighter and definitely has better striking power. Johnson has been able to fend off other opponents that have attempted to take him down, but stopping Cormier may be another challenge. One of the big keys to this fight is the potential for five rounds. Johnson has struggled in the past with his conditioning, but that won’t be an issue for Cormier.
