Velasquez (13-1) is the UFC heavyweight champion, but he hasn’t fought since October of 2013 due to multiple injuries. He has won four straight fights, including three straight title bouts. Werdum (19-5-1) is the current UFC interim-heavyweight champion. He won that title back on Nov. 15 by beating Mark Hunt when an interim-bout was created due to Velasquez’ injuries. Werdum has won five straight fights since returning to the UFC.
According to the latest oddsmakers, Velasquez is the clear favorite in this bout, as he has odds of -550 to win, while Werdum comes in with a money line of +375 to win. This fight is the main event of UFC 188 on Saturday and will take place from Mexico City Arena in Mexico and air live on PPV at 10PM ET.
The big question about this fight is will Velasquez have the same conditioning we have grown accustomed to seeing him have? He is called the “cardio king” because he can push a tremendous face for a heavyweight and his grappling quickly gasses his opponents. If for some reason he doesn’t have that same motor, and the fight has to remain standing, Werdum has shown tremendous growth as a striker and will have an edge on the feet. Werdum is also a black belt in jiu-jitsu, so Velasquez could have some trouble when the fight hits the ground early.
